Statistically significant

"Statistically significant" means the p value is below a limit set in advance, usually .05. This is an agreement in research, not a law of nature.

Example: p = .005 is below .05: the difference between the phone groups counts as statistically significant. For gender and phone use (p = .401) it does not.

Caution: Statistically significant does not mean "important" or "large". Not significant does not mean "there is no difference" - the data just don't provide enough evidence.
