The "Columns" page and level of measurement
Here you define for each column what it contains. This determines which question types are offered.
- Numbers for calculating: points, age, scale scores (interval/ratio).
- Groups with an order (ordinal, e.g. agreement levels) and groups without an order (nominal, e.g. gender).
- Text and date.
- Naming groups: numbers get names (1 = yes, 2 = no); the names appear in tables and charts.
- Setting the order: for groups with an order that are stored as text (no degree, lower secondary, A-levels), see "Setting the order of groups".
- Label: the readable name for tables and charts.
- "No answer" stands for: a numeric value such as 99 or -9 that counts as missing (at most three values).
- Statable counts empty text cells as missing when the data comes from CSV, Excel or Stata or was typed in; they then do not appear as a category of their own. In SPSS an empty text is a valid value unless it is declared missing; Statable opens an .sav file as SPSS saved it. So the number of cases for text columns from CSV or Excel can differ from SPSS.
- Norm scores as a new column: z, T, IQ score, stanine, percentile rank (see separate article).
"Done - to the question" saves and leads to the page. The original file stays unchanged.
