Opening data: formats and structure
Statable reads Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm, .xls), OpenDocument (.ods), CSV/TSV/TXT, SPSS (.sav, .zsav) and Stata (.dta, Stata 10 and later).
Statable also opens SAS files (.sas7bdat and .xpt). It recognizes dates and times by their format. Missing values stay missing.
Note: in SAS, value labels are kept in a separate catalog (.sas7bcat). It is not read. The numbers come along, the value labels do not. Add them in Statable under "Columns", or export them from SAS as a table.
Save data from Access or an SQL database as CSV or Excel there first, then open it in Statable. A direct connection to the database is not possible in the browser.
Expected structure
The first row holds the column names, below it one row per person. A file with names but no rows counts as empty (often the template instead of the filled-in file).
If it fails
- "Statable does not know this file format": save as .xlsx, .csv or .sav in the source software.
- "From a newer version": reload the page to fetch the new version.
- For SPSS and Stata files Statable keeps variable labels and value labels. From Stata the missing values .a to .z (at most three per column) are kept as "no answer" with their labels, date columns as dates.
- "Statable can't read this Stata version": save again in Stata with "save, version(14)" or export as .csv/.sav.
