How do I turn industry or occupation codes into readable names? (assigning a classification, ÖNACE, ISCO)
In brief
How do I turn industry or occupation codes into readable names? The data assistant "Assign a classification" (Edit data) turns a column of ÖNACE codes (industries) or ISCO codes (occupations) into a new column with the title or the code of a level. The codes themselves stay.
How it works in Statable
- Choose the column with the codes.
- Choose the classification: ÖNACE 2008, ÖNACE 2025 or ISCO-08.
- Choose the level (that of the code or a coarser one, for ÖNACE the section) and whether title or code goes into the new column.
- Check the name and choose "Create new column".
How codes are found
- When comparing, for ÖNACE upper and lower case, spaces, dots and hyphens in the code do not count. So "01.11", "0111" and "A 01.11" count as the same code. For ISCO upper and lower case and spaces do not count.
- Nothing further is searched. There is no search for similar codes and no guessing.
- A code that is not found stays empty. Statable counts such codes and gives the first examples.
- A row without a code stays empty. A code that is coarser than the chosen level has no value there; the cell stays empty.
- A number with decimals is not read as a code.
- Statable also says in how many rows the spelling of the code was adjusted and how many entries of the classification occur in the data.
Warnings
- ÖNACE 2008 and ÖNACE 2025 are not the same. Switching from one version to the other is not a renaming: some activities were split, merged or moved. Statable offers no crosswalk.
- Leading zeros: if the column is a number column, leading zeros are lost when it is read as a number ("0110" becomes 110, "01.11" becomes 1.11), and such codes are not found. It is better to open the file again and "read as text" for the column.
- The titles are in German (with the German app) or in English, as the source has them. Nothing is translated into other languages.
- This step cannot be repeated in a template, because the assignment needs the loaded classification.
Source and licence
The classifications come from the classification database of Statistics Austria. Licence: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). Attribution: "Datenquelle: Statistik Austria - data.statistik.gv.at". Below the assistant it is stated which classification with which retrieval date was used.
Requirements and limits
- The classification is fetched on first use from the same server as Statable itself, never from a foreign one. No data from Statable are sent.
- Only the structure of the classification (code and title per level) is needed. A key for switching between the versions is not included.
- A code that would lead to two entries in the classification is not used for the search.
Typical examples
- Write the section (for example "Manufacturing") from the four-digit ÖNACE code into a new column.
- Form the major occupational group from the ISCO code and then compare groups.
